Beagles are not only excellent hunting dogs, they are also very loyal companions with a happy-go-lucky spirit. Beagles are curious, clever, and energetic hounds that are easy-going and enjoy the company of people and other dogs. Their merry dispositions and loving hearts make them a great family addition.
Is a beagle a good fit for a family with young children? Yes! If you do a google search for the best family dog breed, you will find beagles on almost every list. Beagles are extremely friendly and tend to be gentle and patient with children. Their smaller size makes them less likely to knock a small child down while playing. Beagles love to play and run but they also make the best snuggle buddies at the end of a long day. Why don't the tri color puppies have more tan? Tri color beagles are born mostly black and white. As they grow, their tan color will replace the black on their heads, shoulders, and hips. The same is true for chocolates (brown/tan/white) and blue (silver) beagle puppies. Puppies will gain more tan in place of their main color as they get older. Any white will stay mostly the same. What kind of home does a beagle need? It is very important that beagles have:
What kind of health problems do beagles have? Beagles are generally healthy and are less susceptible to genetic health conditions or issues like hip dysplasia than other breeds. Beagles are very prone to ear infections and can be affected by eye issues like glaucoma and corneal dystrophy. Their average lifespan is 12-15 years. |
Do you raise pocket beagles? Technically "pocket beagles" no longer exist. While this breed did exist prior to the 1900's, those lines are now extinct. Some breeders have attempted to re-create the pocket beagle by breeding in smaller dogs like chihuahuas or dachshunds somewhere in their lines. Modern pocket beagles are considered a designer breed and are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Instead, the AKC recognizes 2 beagle varieties-- 13" beagles and 15" beagles. We raise the smaller 13" variety. The photo shown is an example of a modern pocket beagle vs a 13" beagle. Are Beagles good with other animals? In general, beagles get along very well with other dogs and other animals. We have never brought an adult beagle into our kennel that did not get along with our other dogs. Beagles do especially well with other animals and pets if they are introduced at an early age or are raised together in the same home. We do our best to socialize our puppies with other animals that they may encounter throughout their lives, however, it is also important that families continue this type of socialization after the puppy goes home. Are Beagles easy to train? Beagles are very intelligent but can also be very stubborn. Like with most dogs, the key to good training is consistency. Training a dog can be a challenging task that a family should be prepared for. The most common and dominant coloring of beagles is the traditional tri color (black, white, tan). However, beagles come in many different colors, including: chocolate (brown, white, tan), lemon and white, blue (silver) white and tan, bluetick, redtick, black and tan, tan and white and many others. Merle is not a naturally occurring coloring for a beagle. A merle beagle has been mixed at some point with another breed (dachshund, catahoula leopard dog) and is not recognized by the AKC. |
